CYDC @ Dance Days 2014

For Dance Days 2014, CYDC are thrilled to be working with emerging choreographer Joseph Toonga, Artistic Director of Just Us Dance Theatre. Joseph, a graduate from London Contemporary Dance School, formed his company in 2007. His interests stem from the fusion of hip hop and contemporary dance styles and how dancers can manipulate their movement to achieve an embodiment of both styles and how this “collaborative form can inter connect and disconnect without neglecting the importance of context and cultures.” In 2011 he was awarded the Blueprint bursary supported by East London Dance and Sadlers Wells and in 2013 received Arts Council funding as well as becoming a resident artist at Greenwich Dance. He is also the recipient of the Deutsche Bank Creative Award and the production award at the International Competition for choreographers in Hanover.

CYDC @ Dance Days

County Youth Dance Company are festival regulars and have been performing at Dance Days since it began in 2006. CYDC have worked with a variety of professional choreographers and companies including:

Gary Clarke & Steve Blake

Gary was a member of Lea Anderson’s much acclaimed all male company The Featherstonehaughs and over a duration of 10 years performed in some of the companies’ most seminal film and theatre works including the 1989 classic “Flesh & Blood”. Steve Blake is Lea Anderson’s long term collaborator and composer and contributed to most of the work she produced over a 25 year period.

In 2006 & 2007, Steve & Gary created two site specific pieces with CYDC – one that took place on the Helwick Lightship in the marina and one that was a promenade piece that took audiences on a journey through the museum.

Gary has now gone on to work as an independent dance artist and choreographer whilst Steve continues to compose music for a variety of dance companies whilst being an accompanist for dance classes at Trinity Laban.

Dave McKenna

Dave Mckenna was originally a dancer with Motionhouse; one of the UK’s foremost dance theatre companies who are also Dance Days regulars. In 2008, Dave created a Parisian themed work outside the National Waterfront Museum for CYDC. Dave also formed his own physical theatre company, BeingFrank, who have also showcased work at Dance Days and will bring two pieces to this years festival. He also works on numerous male dance projects in the West Midlands with his BOYS DANCE programme.

Helen Parlor

Helen Parlor has been working as a contemporary dancer, choreographer, Artistic Director and rehearsal director since 1998. She has performed in numerous works by Jonathon Lunn, Scott Ambler, Yael Flexer and Nikky Smedley as well as performing with Motionhouse, Mobius Dance Theatre and Panta Rei Danseteater. Between 2009-2012, Helen made four site specific pieces for CYDC @ Dance Days. Most recently she was the Assistant Choreographer for the London 2012 Opening of the Paralympic Games. Helen is now concentrating on her company ‘Parlor Dance’.

Charlotte Eatock

Charlotte, a graduate from London Studio Centre and Intoto Dance, is a freelance contemporary dance artist based in Cornwall. Charlotte was a dancer in ex WGYDC member Henri Oguike’s company for three years that saw her perform to huge audiences around the world. During that time she also choreographed for National Youth Dance Wales whilst Henri was NYDW’s Artistic Director. She was also a member of the Richard Alston Dance Company at The Place. Charlotte first came to work with CYDC during a RADC intensive and from this made an Alice in Wonderland inspired site specific work at Dance Days 2013. She currently teaches at the University of Plymouth and is also making her own work in film.
